About the event

Houston Cinema Arts Society Festival presents Wood Street.

Over the course of a year, the residents of the largest unhoused encampment in Oakland fight against eviction threats by the city that will not only destroy the infrastructure they’ve built but also dismantle their community. Primarily following two residents of Wood Street, John and LaMonté, this on-the-ground documentary traces resistance efforts from community meetings to town halls to barricades-building. Caron Creighton’s vertité approach truly embodies citizen filmmaking, holding together the complexity of diametric approaches for advocacy without flattening perspectives. The result is a deeply intimate and moving portrait of a community rallying to save itself against the forces of gentrification and erasure.
